Creating a festival of French war films

Introduction

This assessment is part of the module “History, Film and Memory: Representing World Wars in French cinema”. It is an example submitted by Dr Gábor Gelléri (Aberystywyht University)

Assessment

As part of the assessment of the module, students can choose to organize the programme of a fictional war film festival. They need to write individually about each movie that ‘screens’ in the festival, and also design fictional events that accompany the experience of the screening such as talks, lectures or exhibitions.

Students are asked to put this information on a website and accompany it with a flyer and a reflective commentary.

This creative exercise is worth 40% of the mark of the module.

Rationale

Students are invited to think about the movies in a different way, reflecting about the impact events like fil festivals could have on the public. They are also putting into practice other skills such as graphic design, blogging and website building, whilst also using the contents taught in the module.
